The Historic Ojai Theater, located in the bucolic downtown stretch of Ojai, California was the sight for the premier of the motorsports documentary, "B5141872." The theater is billed as a unique cinema experience combining the best viewing technologies with classic Hollywood charm. And, it was in fact, the ideal place to sit with an overflowing tub of buttery popcorn, an ice-cold soda, amazing surround sound, and the big screen flickering to life the tale of Paul Brown and the Tiger Racing/Wellendorf Performance team's effort in building a championship racecar.

The documentary is the passion work of Allan Crocket and friends from Crocket's Barber Driving Experience, homed in Camarillo, California. The film takes a revealing look at what Tiger Racing has had to overcome and work through this season. The in-depth exposé examines the 1969 Mustang Boss 494 Can Am Series from concept, to build, to testing and on to the first races of the 2011 Pirelli World Challenge GTS season.

Tiger Racing is a professional and vintage motorsport team based in the Los Angeles suburb of Covina, California, and their lead driver is K&N sponsored, Paul Brown. The films name "B5141872" is taken from the Mustang's VIN number, and although recalling the film's title may present challenges later, remembering the honest, heartfelt, emotional roller-coaster imagines will not. The film begins and ends with Brown's triumphant victory at this year's Grand Prix at Long Beach, indeed a story onto itself, yet for Brown the win at Long Beach only marked what is shaping up to be a historic milestone season for him and his Tiger Racing team.

Piloting the K&N Motorsports Infiniti G35, Brown sent notice early this year by setting several track records, and by winning the opening two rounds of the Redline Pro Time Attack Events for Super Modified RWD. And with his trusted friend and veteran Crew Chief, Adam Cox, Brown followed up his sweep of both races of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, by increasing his points lead in the SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge GTS Driver's Championship and finishing second in both races of the weekend at Infineon Raceway.
The K&N sponsored driver has been on the SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge podium a total of seven times already this season.

"We were all looking forward to another good weekend and even though we had the car to win, the focus was to score points and keep our eye on the real prize, the Championship," Brown remarked. "Going into Rounds 9 and 10, we had one goal in mind and that was to keep it clean, stay out of trouble and finish both races in the best position possible."

Brown currently has the points lead with 1249, 221 points over second place, with two rounds of racing remaining. K&N Race News spoke with Allan Crocket about making a race documentary, and the possibility of "B5141872 Part II - The Championship."

What inspired you to take this documentary in the direction that you did?
"A few things got me going on this project. First and foremost it involved a very talented, good friend (Brown). I raced Mustangs in 2008 to a Time Attack class championship, and so I knew that this car would be good, significant and potentially historical. It really started out as a build documentary, but as things developed, the build became just the building block of this story. The quality of the people and the strong fundamentals, work ethic, and friendship they showed, won me over to make it a larger picture. I literally was compelled at that point. My right-hand man, Stephen Sanderlin, and I started in October and ended filming in April; I'm guessing I have about 700 hours in the project."

Ideally what do you expect to achieve with the film?
"The piece is designed to be adaptable as ether a one hour TV format, film festival, or Web product. The story is not over, the journey is well underway, but as professional racing is a show, the SCCA has to slow Paul down to make the racing close. So he is now dealing with power restriction, and worse tons of "rewards weight". Can he hang on for a championship? Hard to say, but it will be fun to find out. It is possible the sponsors will request the piece to be expanded to a feature release based on this piece and the potential of making history.
Brown extended his points lead this weekend by finishing second in both round 9 and 10.

What sort of challenges did you face making the film, and does it live up to your expectations?
"OMG - plenty of challenges! Where do I start, there was really no script, set, sound stage. Sound was a serious challenge as we filmed on noisy racetracks and interviewed people while at SEMA with tons of background noise. Another challenge is we didn't go with a crew of 20. It was Stephen and I, or many times just me, with an ENG style HD video camera. Stephen was shooting with a Canon 7D and these two cameras look very different when you edit. Over the project we learned to set the Canon's scene files to be closer to the Panasonic Video camera. Lots of learning on the fly. In a way I guess, this is an ultimate reality show, no set, no actors, just competition with the clock, the checkbook, and the other teams. Ultimately however, we feel that it looks acceptable, and after a few hundred hours mixing, it sounds very real."

"Does the project live up to my expectations? Yes, because my journey was very rewarding, and I think we tell the story well. Really though, it's all through the viewers eyes. They will determine the good or bad of it."

After the premier in Ojai, what is the plan for the film?
"Like Paul, I am in competition. I want to measure myself against the people, and companies that do this sort of thing. That means film festival competitions. I also want to continue this story and it looks like there is a very real chance that may happen."

The 2011 Ford F-150 pickup with the 5.0 liter engine comprises three and a half decades of fine tuning and conveys an abundance of quality, design and ingenuity.

With features like exceptional handling, a 360 horsepower V8 engine, a smooth and quiet ride, great turning radius and solid towing capabilities, the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Ford F-150 pickup is by far one of the most useful trucks on the market.

K&N released an air intake system (77-2581KP) that unlocks the horsepower and torque the restrictive factory air box and filter system took away.  K&N 77-2581KP is guaranteed to increase horsepower by completely replacing the stock air filter and top portion of the airbox with K&N's free-flowing mandrel-bent intake tube and high-flow air filter. Dyno testing was performed on the 77-2581KP, and revealed an estimated gain just under 10 horsepower at 5508 rpm when installed on 2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014 Ford F-150 models with the 5.0 liter engine.

The 77-2581KP is equipped with air filter part RC-5173, which is washable and reusable.  This performance air filter can go for up to 100,000 miles before it needs servicing depending on driving conditions. It allows high air flow while providing outstanding filtration.  In order to provide cooler air to the engine the RC-5173 is isolated from much of the engine heat by a custom designed heat shield.  It is placed on top of the OE inlet in the lower airbox assembly so it can direct cooler outside air into the air filter.

Owners of the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Ford F-150 5.0L can feel confident in their 77-2581KP performance air intake, because it is backed by the famous K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty®.

K&N Sensation David Rampy Nearly Doubles at NHRA Div 3 Event in Bowling Green

Chasing NHRA Division 3 points for 2011 in both Competition Eliminator and Super Stock, David Rampy added even more points to the board during the NHRA Div 3 event at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky when he put his 1932 Bantam in the Comp Eliminator Winner's Circle and nearly doubled up when he also made it to the final with his 1989 Camaro in Super Stock for a runner-up finish.

"Boy it was hot," reflected Rampy on the weekend's weather conditions. "The track was a little tricky, so we were able to make a few adjustments. We did test on Thursday prior to the race, so I think that gave us, well not an advantage but gave us an opportunity to make some extra runs. So we were able to have a little better tune-up for the conditions."

In the Comp Eliminator class, Rampy put his Racers Edge/K&N Bantam in the number three spot. "I felt like that was a decent spot to be in," he said. "I had to run fellow K&N racer Greg Kamplain first round and was able to get by him and off to second round where I had to run Doug Warren in his A/ED dragster. Well Doug redlighted so that let me get on by him and into round three."

Meanwhile, Rampy was also tearing it up in Super Stock where he had sent home Henson, Emmons and Hellenberg during the first three rounds. In round four, Rampy found himself with a heads up run against fellow GT/HA class competitor Aaron Disinger and based on their qualifying numbers and over three tenths of a second advantage, Rampy knew that he only needed a decent safe green to take the round win.

Rampy's third round in Comp Eliminator was somewhat of a tough one. "I had to run Steve Ambrose. I was just able to sneak by him, it was a really tight race. I missed the tree a little bit and thank goodness he missed the tree."

His quite uncharacteristic .064 reaction time caused Rampy to not be able to take as much advantage of Ambrose's even later .090 light. Both competitors fought hard for the stripe, trying to take as little as possible for the win. When the tough battle ended, the victory belonged to Rampy, but not without the consequence of taking a CIC hit of .04 with him into the semi-finals.

"At three cars, there was a bye on the other side of the ladder, so I had to run Rick Brown," said Rampy of the Comp Semifinal. "Rick had a .06 CIC to my .04 and I felt like that was going to be a real close race."

Both Brown and Rampy had their best lights of eliminations; Brown gave it his all with a .001 to Rampy's .012. Rampy knew that on the other side of the ladder, with his bye into the final, was another A/EA class car, driven by Mike Farrell. Should Rampy get by his round with Brown, that would set up for a very interesting heads up Comp Eliminator final round. Because of that, Rampy didn't have to worry about any additional CIC hit he may take trying to beat Brown.

And it worked. Rampy did what he had to do to beat Brown and for any other final, would have taken another CIC hit along with him. "Whenever you have a class heads up run in Comp Eliminator with another car just like yours, the index just goes back to the standard index," he explained. "So it doesn't matter, for example, if you have been fifty-five under and he's only been forty-five under, it doesn't matter. All of that is wiped clean for that match up. So I knew if we could get by Brown, no matter how fast we had to go, it would go back to the original index for the final."

Rampy was also making headway to another final over in Super Stock where he used a beautiful .002 light to take a .016 starting line advantage over Dan Kyle and stay on the good side of the double breakout in round five. In the semifinals, he outdrove Irvin Johns at both ends of the track, giving himself a chance to double up at the NHRA Div event.

He had his toughest Super Stock round of the weekend in the final against Mike Walter. Although Rampy had him doubled up on the tree, he was unable to match Walter's dead on the dial 10.726 run, with only a mere .007 separating them at the finish line.

But for Rampy he wouldn't come away from the event empty handed, he had already wrapped up one Wally in Comp Eliminator. "Yeah, I did have a perfect light," reflected Rampy with a smile as he spoke of the Comp Final with Mike Farrell. "We did have him covered a little bit, you know index-wise we had him covered. He went red and trust me, I didn't mean to be [laughs] perfect on the tree 'cause I knew I had him covered by about four or five hundredths."

"I just wanted to be solid but I will tell ya that the sunlight was bad at that point," he continued. "I was running the right lane, and when you looked from the right lane towards the left you would look almost right at the sun. I was struggling a little bit to find [the point to look at on the tree], but sometimes when you find the tree like that, you are struggling to see it, but you will actually concentrate a little bit harder to make sure you don't miss the tree. I'm pretty sure that's why I went double-oh."

Going into Indy for the U.S. Nationals, Rampy is sitting fairly good on the divisional level after the success with both of his K&N entries. He currently holds down the number two NHRA Div 3 spot in Super Stock and number four in Competition Eliminator.

With little time to keep his two cars fresh between the numerous rounds he put on them at the divisional and immediately heading for Indy and only a day to spare, Rampy notes the importance of using K&N oil filter and air filters. "You just have to have certain things on your car that you know are doing their jobs, holding and sealing things as they should be and protecting these high dollar motors," he commented. "K&N products play such an important role in all my successes on the track and not only am I proud to be associated with them, their products more than speak for themselves."

Josh McGuire Racing Experiences an Exceptional Weekend in Super Late Models

While racing at the "Jack Shutts Memorial", Josh McGuire and his team made a few changes to their car which the driver is confident helped them win "the race and a few more afterward."
The Josh McGuire Racing Team spent a recent weekend racing that could be considered successful at the least. In fact, their success earned them $10,500.00 in earnings. The team began the weekend with a trip to the Skyline Raceway, in Stewart, Ohio, where they were scheduled to compete in the Dirt Late Model class of the "Jack Shutts Memorial".
While recently racing at the 24th annual Butterball Wooldridge Memorial" at Richmond Raceway, in Richmond, Kentucky, Josh McGuire led the feature from flag to flag, and in turn, took the win.
While recently racing at the 24th annual Butterball Wooldridge Memorial at Richmond Raceway, in Richmond, Kentucky, Josh McGuire led the feature from flag to flag, and in turn, took the win.

Referring to the heat race, the driver said, "We led till the halfway point, and then went to finish second. We were still within a few car lengths of the leader, but weren't good enough to keep him behind us. It was actually a blessing in disguise to run second. That allowed us to change a spring on the car that would turn into a really good move down the road. It is the move that won us the race (feature) and a few more afterward. If we had won the heat, we probably would not have made the change and then would have lost the race in the long run."

Lining up fifth in the 40-lap feature, McGuire eventually took the lead in the sixteenth lap. Holding the first place spot throughout the remainder of the race, the driver took the checkered flag and left the team anticipating what might transpire on the following day.

"The race was one of the best races most fans have ever seen," explained McGuire. "We ran 2 by two and three wide for the first 15 laps with four other cars. I know at least once we were even four wide. We were always beside another car until we took the lead on lap sixteen," he continued. "Luckily, a caution flag came out right after I took the lead, so that allowed us to start on the pole in front of everybody else.
The Josh McGuire Racing team recently exopereinced a successful weekend, earning wins at two different venues.
The Josh McGuire Racing team recently exopereinced a successful weekend, earning wins at two different venues.
We went on to pull away from the field during the rest of the race and won by a comfortable margin. Jason Montgomery, #21, was the last car I had to pass to take the lead. Jason started on the pole since he was the car that outran us in the heat race. The win was a real confidence booster for the whole team and especially for the next night at Richmond. We knew we had made some changes that would really pay off on our short track program."

Rolling into the Richmond Raceway, at Richmond, Kentucky on the following day, The Josh McGuire Racing Team was prepared to compete in the 24th Annual "Butterball Wooldridge Memorial". After recording the quickest qualifying lap, McGuire wasted no time continuing his winning streak, as he was the first to cross the finish line in his heat.

When the green flag waved and the main event was underway, Josh McGuire shot out and immediately took the lead. In fact, the driver never gave up the first place position throughout the entire fifty-lap race and in turn took the checkered flag.

"We were challenged on the restarts during the race, but were able to pull away once we could get five or six laps going into the run," stated McGuire. "I was worried about all of the drivers starting up front around me, as they have all won big races at that particular track. The key to winning was patience," he continued. "Also, getting a good starting position, which went back to qualifying. We were able to set a fast time, which got us the pole for the heat. Then our heat victory led to the pole of the feature. The closer to the front you start, the easier it is to win."

When asked the importance of his team, Josh McGuire explained, "Racing is not a one-man sport. You cannot do it alone. There is so much work to be done while you are at the track. I am lucky to have great family and friends that love to help out with the race car. I would not be racing at all without their help and support."

Josh McGuire is also acutely aware of the importance of properly maintaining his racecar. That in mind, the driver said, "We have been using K&N products for several years now, and find them to really be the best on the market for what we do. The air filters allow our engines to run longer between rebuilds, because no dirt ever enters into the system through the air filter. The oil filters keep our oil running clean and handles the enormous amount of flow that we put through them. K&N products simplify our maintenance program, and in the long run, save us money and time. They are the best. Why would anyone not want to use the best?"
