"What a year...probably one of the toughest of my career, but the tough times seem to have disappeared with the highlight of the championship, the Gold Cup, the Iron Man, and 12 wins in a season. What a Year!!" marked a triumphant Meyers. With over 50 competitors on the dirt track at Charlotte Motor Speedway last weekend, Jason "Hot Foot" Meyers put a colossal exclamation point on 2010 by winning the last two races of the season and the World of Outlaws Championship. Meyers was the first car to pass under the checkered flag two times on Saturday, making Meyers the only driver this year who has won two features in a single day.
Meyers and Elite Racing are also now the first team from California to ever to win the World of Outlaws title. The K&N sponsored racer became only the eighth driver to win a World of Outlaws title, joining the ranks of: Steve Kinser, Donny Schatz, Sammy Swindell, Bobby Davis Jr., Dave Blaney, Mark Kinser, and Danny Lasoski.
"It was absolutely tormenting sitting and waiting two and a half weeks to finish the last two races," confessed Meyers. "And then when we got to the races, we were once again delayed by rain (Friday's race was delayed until Saturday evening). "It gave us a chance to see what we were made of though as a team...to see if we could stand up to the pressure. I am very proud of how our team rallied during the latter half of the season, to come back from behind, and win our first World of Outlaw championship." "You never know until is over," adds Meyers. "This year was an emotional roller coaster, struggling to find that consistency that we are so accustomed to. To be honest, there was never a time when we thought we had the championship, and when we got close to the end, and the championship was in sight, we never let ourselves think that way. We just stayed the course and continued our drive, and I think that is why we were so strong on Charlotte at the finals. We never let ourselves think the championship was ours until the final checkered flag was waved. Even after we had clinched the championship, after the first feature on Saturday night, we still would not let ourselves think of it as ours, until after the night was over." We asked Meyers, other than the obvious wins and the championship, if there was a turning point, or a specific moment that stood out? "The Knoxville Nationals was the ultimate low for us this season. After I missed the scales on our qualifying night, rather than letting that moment define our season, we took that mistake and turned it into a championship. From that moment forward, we made the necessary changes, and put together an offensive charge towards the top. We made a personal change after the national, which was a very tough decision, and it put a lot of pressure on Brian (Bloomfield) and Glen (Beaton) to perform and fill the role of leaders within our team. A total team effort from that day forward is what led us to the championship." We also wondered how long Meyers and his team would lollygag in the glow of their championship before beginning to plot towards its defense? "We started thinking about defending the title the moment that is was ours. Racing is just like any other business, if you aren't moving forward, then you are falling behind. To be honest, we are six weeks into preparing for 2011 already. It's just now that it will be titled 'defending the title.' We are enjoying it though at the same time. This is a lifetime achievement for everyone on this team, and we would be cheating ourselves if we didn't enjoy it a little!"
